What are the social and economic consequences of the dramatic rise in overweight and obese young people, considering the constantly increasing costs for our health system? What needs to happen to make consumers actually act on what they know about sustainable consumption when it comes to buying electrical goods, for example? Why can't the legal system be modified to force companies to switch to sustainable production methods?

The topic of "social-ecological research" was made a funding priority in 2001 to concentrate attention on the issue of solving problems related to social sustainability. In 2006, the topic of "economics for sustainability" was introduced as a funding priority to address the previously neglected economic aspects of sustainability.
